In August I will celebrate the first month that I will replace my day job income from – you guessed it – writing. I enacted a new series of habits and routines that I discovered through some very affordable online courses on how to earn a living by freelance writing. I found the affordable systems of support and began to LEARN BY DOING, not by expecting perfection.
I turned to freelance writing last year as a way to take my earning potential into my own hands after realizing I that 1-3% annual raises were not enough to actually fund the life and the legacy I want for myself.
I feel sympathetic for the Hollywood youngsters who had to grow up before America’s eyes, because now I feel like I am doing the same, reckoning with choices I made a long time ago with an audience of people who can judge, question, and critique in ways that – let’s be honest – are sometimes valid.
In 2015 I wanted to be a writer, but professionally, I was not there yet. The problem was not that I didn't have any editor contacts, or that I had never taken an internship at a magazine, or that I hadn't accumulated enough bylines. The problem was this: I still thought of myself as an employee.
